3. We Get to Work Reducing Risk

Wildfires are unpredictable, but a well-prepared property can make all the difference. Creating a defensible space—a buffer between your home and surrounding vegetation—helps reduce the risk of fire reaching your home.

Majority of homes ignite from wind-driven embers, not direct flames. These embers can travel miles, landing on roofs, decks, and dry vegetation, sparking fires that spread to structures. Proper mitigation, helps prevent ember ignition and protects your home.

Frequently Asked Questions: Certified Wildfire Mitigation

Please reach us at info@foothillsfireblock.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

The Home Ignition Zone is the physical area surrounding a structure, divided into specific zones (Zone 0, 1, and 2), that determines a home's vulnerability to wildfire. Proper mitigation within the HIZ disrupts the path of radiant heat and prevents ember intrusion, which is the leading cause of structural loss.

Insurance carriers look for documented, system-level hazard reduction. This requires an assessment by a Certified Wildfire Mitigation Specialist (CWMS) to evaluate your defensible space, structural hardening (like ember-resistant vent mesh), and fuel load. Completing a certified mitigation plan provides the necessary proof of compliance to underwriters to secure or reinstate a policy.

Structural hardening involves engineering the  exterior of a home to resist ignition. This goes beyond landscaping and includes retrofitting vulnerable points such as attic vents, decking materials, and the immediate 0-5 foot non-combustible zone (Zone 0). Hardening is a critical component of Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) compliance.

No. Effective wildfire mitigation is strategic hazard reduction, not clear-cutting. We focus on continuous canopy disruption, ladder fuel removal, and targeted thinning based on topography and fire behavior science. The goal is to alter the intensity of an approaching fire while preserving the ecological and aesthetic value of your property.
