Defensible Space

Why Defensible Space Matters

A well-maintained defensible space helps slow or stop the spread of wildfire, giving firefighters a safer area to defend your home. It also reduces the chances of embers igniting nearby trees, shrubs, or dry grasses that could put your home at risk.

Key Zones of Defensible Space

To maximize fire resistance, defensible space is divided into three main zones:

  • Zone 1: The Immediate Zone (0-5 feet from your home)
    • Remove all dead plants, leaves, and debris.
    • Use non-combustible materials like gravel or stone instead of mulch.
    • Keep roofs, gutters, and decks clear of flammable debris.
  • Zone 2: The Intermediate Zone (5-30 feet from your home)
    • Trim trees so branches are at least 10 feet away from each other.
    • Remove dead vegetation and keep grass mowed to four inches or less.
    • Space out shrubs and small trees to prevent fire from jumping between them.
  • Zone 3: The Extended Zone (30-100 feet from your home)
    • Thin out dense tree coverage and remove lower branches.
    • Create breaks in vegetation to slow the fire’s progress.
    • Keep wood piles and flammable materials away from structures.
